USA Team for Budapest Junior World Championships 14th to 17th October 2004

REPORT AT END OF DAY ONE

 

BUDAPEST, Hungary (October 14, 2004) - USA's Ronda Rousey (Santa Monica, Calif.) advanced to the semifinals of the women's 63kg category at the Junior World Championships today in Budapest, Hungary.  The Junior World Championships are for athletes under 20 years of age.  This year's event sees a total of 61 different countries, 224 men and 172 women. 

 

In a division countaining athletes from 28 different countries, Ronda went 3-0, defeating Nozumi Hirai (Japan), Zarina Aldikova (Kazakhstan), and Jayoung Kong (Korea), all by ippon, the judo equivalent f at knockout in boxing or pin in wrestling.  She beat Hirai in 1 minute 37 seconds and Aldikova in 20 seconds, both by arm locks.  The fight with Kong was tougher.  Ronda got a stalling penalty, then threw Kong for a quarter point and then pinned her for 25 seconds and the win at the 3:50 mark.  Ronda now waits until Saturday  where she will meet Irina Gromova of Russia.  If she wins, she'll play the winner of Mao of China vs. Wetzer of the Netherland for the gold medal.  If she loses she'll play the winner of Cachola of Portugal vs. Bolshak of Ukraine for the Bronze medal.

90 kg David Chapman, Jason Morris Judo, Scotia, NY

Lost to Carvalli Guillaume of Canada who subsequently lost to Cheon Choi, eliminating Chapman.

 

100 kg Johnathan Lambert, Yellowhill Judo, Cherokee, NC

Lost to Shinkeyev of Kazahkstan who subsequently lost to Ishii of Japan, eliminating Lambert.

 

+100 kg J Daniel McCormick, Kodokan Judo, Arlington, TX

Lost to Schlittler of Brazil who subsequently lost to Gujejiani of Georgia, eliminating McCormick.

 

48 kg Christina Pro, South Hills Judo, Jefferson Hills, PA

Lost to Fukumi of Japan who made it to the semifinal putting Pro in the consolation round.  Christina beat Garcia of Spain by ippon at the 2:30 mark, but then lost to Simantov of Israel, eliminating her from medal contention.

 

52 kg Anna Palmer, OTC, Colo. Springs, CO

Lost to Desalle of France who made it to the semifinal putting Anna in the consolation round where she lost fo Chytra of the Czech Republic and was eliminated.

 

57 kg Katherine Ensler, Sooner Judo Club, Norman, OK

Lost to Gasiulyte of Lithuania who subsequently lost to Ahrens of Germany, eliminating Katherine.

 

The Junior World Championship is the pinnacle of the sport for athletes under 20 years of age.  Over 100 countries attend the event, which showcases the world's best up-and-coming athletes as well as athletes who are already Olympians, including USA's Ronda Rousey (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Nicole Kubes (Fort Worth, Texas), both of whom competed in Athens in August.  At 17 years old, Ronda was the youngest player in the entire Olympic Judo event and Nicole was the next youngest, just 6 months older than Ronda.  Both finished in ninth place.  USA's representative at 60 kgs is Kenny Hashimoto (Thornton, Colo.) who was the Olympic alternate at that weight.

 

Three other USA Olympians have won medals at the Junior World Championships:  Jason Morris (Scotia, New York) 1992 Olympic silver medallist and four-time Olympian, who won bronze in 1986,  Jimmy Pedro (Methuen, Mass.) two-time Olympic bronze medallist (1996, 2004), 1999 World Champion, and four-time Olympian, who won bronze in 1990, and Hillary Wolf (Colo. Springs), two-time Olympian,  who in 1994 becamse the only American to ever win the Junior World Championship.

 

Tomorrow will see Elimination and Consolation Rounds for the women's 70 kg, 78 kg, +78 kg categories and the men's  60 kg, 66 kg, 73 kg, 81 kg.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (October 12, 2004) - The team that will represent USA Judo in the Junior World Championships departed Monday for Budapest, Hungary.  Competition will be Thursday - Sunday, October 14-17.  Athletes selected for the Team are the are the #1 ranked athletes on the under 20 years old national roster, at the close of the 2004 Fall Classic National Championships on September 5th.

 

The Junior World Championship is the pinnacle of the sport for athletes under 20 years of age.  Over 100 countries attend the event, which showcases the world's best up-and-coming athletes as well as athletes who are already Olympians, including USA's Ronda Rousey (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Nicole Kubes (Fort Worth, Texas), both of whom competed in Athens in August.  At 17 years old, Ronda (Left in white fighting Claudia Heill AUT) was the youngest player in the entire Olympic Judo event and Nicole was the next youngest, just 6 months older than Ronda.  Both finished in ninth place.  USA's representative at 60 kgs is Kenny Hashimoto (Thornton, Colo.) who was the Olympic alternate at that weight.
