2014 Chelyabinsk World Championships Preview - 90kg

The -90kg division is arguably the most exciting weight class to watch because it is chock-full of top players. The lead contender is Varlam Liparteliani, who is also No. 1 in the IJF world ranking.

The right-handed Liparteliani likes to throw with uchimata, which he sometimes does as a makikomi. He also has a right-sided side takedown that's very slick. A very upright and confident player, he looks set to finally break through and win his first world title.

There will be several top fighters in his way though, namely 2013 World Champion Asley Gonzalez of Cuba; Olympic and double World Champion, Ilias Iliadis; and 2009 World Champion Lee Kyu-Won. Also in serious contention is 2009 World Silver Medalist Kirill Denisov and 2007 World Champion Tiago Camilo. It's going to be a very exciting category to watch.
