April 2006 - Rousey takes Gold at Birmingham World Cup -
Ronda
Rousey (Buffalo, Grove, Ill./NYAC/Cohen’s Judo/63kg) became the first U.S.
woman to win a European A-Level tournament in nearly a decade when she won gold
at the Birmingham World Cup in Great Britain on Saturday. Rousey (right against
Marzok GER) went undefeated in five matches to claim her second senior European
gold medal, following a win at the B-Level Belgian Open in Arlon in February.
The 19-year-old ousted her first two opponents by ippon (instant win, similar to
a knockout in boxing).
In the quarter-finals, Rousey had
another meeting with Christina Marzok, the German she defeated in the
semi-finals in Belgium. Rousey scored throughout the match with two kokas
(smallest points) and a yuko (quarter-point) before ultimately winning by
waza-ari (half-point). Next up for the Athens Olympian was Sara Alvarez (ESP), a
three-time World Championship medalist who won her first senior European event
when Rousey was just 7-years-old and has claimed nine A-Level titles since then.
Rousey defeated Alvarez in two and a half minutes with her third ippon of the
day to advance to gold medal match.
In
the final, Rousey threw Fanny Riaboff (FRA),
a 2005 World Cup Champion at 57kg, for ippon with o uchi gari (major inner
reaping, circling leg throw) to become the first U.S. woman to win an A-Level
event since three-time Olympian Sandra Bacher
won the Budapest Bank Cup
in 1997.
Rousey’s win also makes her one of
only two U.S. athletes to achieve A-Level status in 2006 and is expected to move
up to a top-six World Ranking next week. Nicole Jomantas.

March 2006 RYAN RESER WINS SILVER AGAIN (Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Ryan
Reser (Colorado Springs, Colo./Olympic Training Center USA Judo National
Training Site/73kg) won his second World Cup medal in as many weeks Saturday
with a silver medal finish at the Sweden Open in Boras. Reser, who earned his
first top-10 World Ranking and A-Level status when he won silver at last week’s
Dutch Open, went 4-1 for another trip to the podium in Sweden. Competing as the
only American in the tournament, Reser opened his day with a first round win
over Vitaliy Ryzhyy (UKR) on a penalty and a second victory by waza-ari
(half-point) against David Papaux (SUI). Reser’s quarter-final was a rematch from last week against 2001
World medalist Krzystof Wilkomirski (POL) whom he had previously defeated on a
penalty. This time, Reser defeated Wilkomirski by ippon (instant win) to
advance to a semi-final against Claudiu Bastea (ROM), an eight-time World Cup
medalist. Reser also won this match by ippon to advance to the final against
Costel Danculea (ROM) who beat the American by ippon. Today’s event was Reser’s
last stop on the European Tour and his final major competition before the U.S.
Nationals and Pan American Trials, April 21-22 in Houston, Texas. Reser’s
back-to-back medals mark the first time an American has medaled at an A-Level
World Cup event since World Champion Jimmy Pedro (Methuen, Mass.)
won silver medals in the same division at the German World Open and the Budapest
World Cup in 2004.

20th March 2006 -(Colorado
Springs, Colo.) – Ryan Reser (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Olympic Training
Center/73kg) won a silver medal Saturday at the Dutch Open in Rotterdam,
Netherlands, the sixth World Cup event of this year’s European Tour. After
spending most of the past week sick, Reser arrived in Rotterdam Wednesday nearly
a kilo underweight. “I was a little worried today. I’d felt weak during all my
practices and so I wasn’t sure how things were going to go,” Reser said. “I
wasn’t expecting to do well, but I guess that’s when you always do your best
when you don’t have expectations.” Ryan opened his day with early wins against Peng Sun (CHN) by two
kokas (smallest points) and Craig Ewers (GBR) by yuko (quarter point). In the
quarter-finals Reser met Henri Schoeman (NED) who finished fifth at the 2005
World Championships and won bronze in February at the Super World Cup in
Hamburg. Reser won the match on a koka to advance to the semi-finals where he
defeated 2001 World bronze medalist Krzystof Wilkomirski (POL) on a penalty.
After a break, Reser returned for the gold medal match against Bryan van Dijk
(NED), a six-time World Cup medalist. Van Dijk scored waza-ari (half point)
early and Reser was held scoreless for the remainder of the match. “I was
sweeping about 30 seconds into the match and he just threw me for waza-ari.
After that he pretty much ran for the rest and I couldn’t catch him,” Reser
said. Reser’s next stop on the Tour will be next week’s Sweden Open in Borras
where he will be joined by his OTC teammate Kirk Hoffmann (Colorado Springs,
Colo./+100kg). “My goal next week is just to go in with the same intensity I
had this week and hopefully I’ll do well,” Reser said. Reser was the only United
States participant at the Rotterdam World Cup. PHOTOS OF THE EVENT AND RYAN
RESER IN COMBAT WILL BE ADDED SOON.

The International Olympic Committee suspended South Korean member Park
Yong-sung on Wednesday. Mr Park, an IOC member since 2002, is being

provisionally deprive Park "of all the rights, prerogatives and functions
deriving from his IOC membership whilst the Ethics Commission continues its
inquiry and until the judicial authorities have rendered a final judgement".
Park, a prominent businessman and president of the International Judo
Federation, was found guilty, along with three other family members, of
embezzling about $30 million in company funds.

Injured Inoue to return to action in early April
(Japan Economic Newswire
Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)TOKYO, Feb. 28_(Kyodo)
_ Japanese heavyweight judoka Kosei Inoue
said Tuesday (27th) he plans to return from an injury layoff at the national
weight-class championships on April 2. Inoue, the 100-kilogram gold medalist at
the 2000 Sydney Olympics, has been sidelined since suffering a torn chest muscle
at the Kano Cup international competition in January last year.
He earlier voiced his intention to return to action at a regional qualifying
competition next Sunday for the open-category national championship, but decided
to wait until he is fitter. Inoue moved up to the over 100-kg class after
failing in his defense of the 100-kg Olympic title in Athens in 2004 with a
shock early-round loss in the eliminations and
repercharge.

February 2006. Dutch do well at Hamburg Otto Super World Cup.
The Dutch team went home with a GOUDEN SURPRISE
and two bronzes after this weekend's Hamburg Otto World Cup. Bryan Van Dijk,
left in a Finch photo in Sunday's edition of De Telegraaph, took the 73kgs gold
while 'wonder boy' Henry Shoeman won bronze in the same weight and
Danielle Vriezema a bronze at 63kgs.
Monday's edition of De Telegraph featured another Finch picture in the article
about Claudia Zwiers. Zwiers didn't quite match her team mates and
slipped to 5th after losing to Kumiko Horie JPN. While the Dutch took 3
medals from 15 players the British, with 16 players, were unable to take a
medal. London 2012 may not be quite 'round the corner'
but.................................!
Japan were first with 12 medals followed by Korea with 4, Russia with 4, Germany
with 9, Cuba with 4, Slovenia with 2; a gold and a silver from 7 players and
a population of two million! It is possible to go on but it just gets more
embarrassing.
At the same event DAX-Sports used 3 pictures by David Finch to advertise
their products. On the right, former Olympic and World Champion Udo Quellmalz
stands next to his enlarged picture from the 1995 Tokyo Worlds where he took the
gold. Two other pictures of 2003 Osaka 81kgs World Champion, Florian Wanner,
were produced in a similar fashion. A web page of Hamburg Otto pictures will
follow within a few days.
