JudoPhotos.Com
Introduction

JudoPhotos.Com (previously Judo Photos Unlimited) was created by David Finch as a judo editorial stock photo  library that has been in existence since 1973 recording European, World and Olympic Judo. Currently JudoPhotos.Com contributes to several international judo publications in Germany, Russia, USA, Hungary, Italy, Holland, Switzerland and Great Britain. See the FEATURES link. Often images are supplied from stock to illustrate editorial articles ranging from judo etiquette and personalities to illustrations of techniques, styles of judo or competition sequences etc.

The vast majority of photographs on this website come from the portfolio of David Finch. However, early photographs of the Budokwai and Dr Jigoro Kano were supplied by Richard Bowen, Trevor Leggett and Dr Ken Kingsbury. They will be added over time.

David Finch has been a member of the Sports Journalist's Association of Great Britain (SJA) since1975 and the Association International Presse Sportif (AIPS) since 1979. His photographs, principally of judo, have been used in more than 100 books around the world including  Athletics, Basketball, Diving and Trampolining,

1986 Sports Writers Association dinner. Left to right: Brian Davies (Budokwai Chairman), Yasuhiro Yamashita (Budokwai Guest Coach, 1984 Olympic champion and 4 times World champion), David Finch and Neil Adams (Budokwai Head Coach, former World Champion and twice Olympic silver medallist)

Many of these books have been solely illustrated by him. They include books  written by former Olympic, World and European Champions such as Yasuhiro Yamashita JPN, Robert Van der Walle BEL, Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki JPN, Neil Adams GBR, Michael Swain USA, Hideotoshi Nakanishi JPN, Peter Seisenbacher AUT, Karen Briggs GBR, Jean-Luc Rouge FRA, Hitoshi Sugai JPN and Brian Jacks GBR among others. Included are several books by successful coaches such as George Kerr (coach to double Olympic Champion Peter Seisenbacher - Crowood Press) and Roy Inman - one of the world's most successful women's coaches (Ippon Books - link: Fighting Films) along with Cyril Carter, coach to Neil Adams GBR, Brian Jacks GBR and Peter Tancred (Shotput) - Pelham Books.

In his Masterclass book Osotogari Yasuhiro Yamashita - possibly the world's finest international sportsman - wrote "The bulk of the competition photographs came from the seemingly limitless portfolio of the leading European specialist judo photographer, David Finch."

The books have ranged from judo instruction books such as Practical Women's Judo (Roy Inman - GBR) where one reviewer wrote "Photos are by the indefatigable David Finch who seems to have photographed every European, World and Olympic Championship ever held." and Olympic Judo - Preparation Training (Neil Adams - GBR) through to La fabuleuse historie des Arts Martiaux (C. Quidet - FRA), the United States Olympic Association Olympic Games Commerative Book (USA) and Judo Fazination (GER) as joint author. He has also worked in a freelance capacity for Sport Agence Magazine (SAM) FRA and Allsport GBR (now Getty Images).

David Finch was at the  2004 Athens Olympic Games. Athens was his seventh Olympics as an accredited photographer.

FOOTNOTES:

Byung Keun Ahn - a Korean Christian - thanks God for his 1985 light-middleweight 71 kgs Seoul World Championship victory while silver medallist, Michael Swain USA, looks on open mouthed and the referee behind, becomes increasingly frustrated at the delay.   Keith Remfry GBR gets carried away with his gripping against Djibilo Nijeradze URS during the 1974 London European's heavyweight category. Remfry won but lost his next contest to Ojeda ESP.
